Just give me the info and let me decide...When we are aware of something that we can do to help prevent a fatal incident, I am sure that the majority of us would not hesitate to take action. But first we need to be aware of just what we CAN do. Many years ago, a Radiology representative came to the office where I was working and offered me a free coupon to have a new test done that could potentially save thousands of lives each year. A test that takes under one minute and you need not be poked or injected with anything. You just lie there. Would you do it? Well I did and so did my husband. That was twelve years ago, and still to this day, not many doctor's recommend or freely advise their patients to go get it done. As of two years ago the cost was still only $120 out of our pocket, since no doctor would seem to order this test. Why? Hmmmmm. With too many hands in the money pot, it is time for us to wake up, be informed and take our own lives into our own hands, for OUR good - not the drug companies or doctor's wearing blinders. Blinders may be good for a horse to keep him moving forward and not get distracted on the trail, but not for the doctor who has our life in his hands. One doctor that I worked with 5 years ago, never heard of it. I could not believe what I was hearing. When I explained the test, and how easy it was, he began ordering it. Of course, he was the first in line to have one done! Just months after receiving a clean bill of health at his annual check-up, Mr. Smith (we will call him), suffered a heart attack and died. He was only 46 and had no risk factors for heart disease. So what was missed? His wife learned that he most likely had plaque in his arteries that ruptured. The silent deadly disease went undetected because Mr. Smith was NOT offered a screening test called a Coronary Calcium Scan. It is a CT scan of the heart that can clearly show the presence of plaque in the arteries and it might be said that it is the BEST screening tools available. ![]() Research published in the European Heart Journal (yes, they never want to give you the info here in the US first), found that coronary calcium scans TRUMPED screenings for cholesterol, blood pressure and other factors in assessing risks for heart attack and heart disease-related death. With the potential to save lives the CCS is not a recommended screening tool. Why? You can look healthy and pass all the tests and still have significant heart disease. If you don't know, you don't have a choice. TELL your doctor you want a CCS. Don't ask, tell you doctor. No insurance?
