Confused about those Statin Drugs?
Here is my "personal" opinion. (Ask your doctor what you should do.) You walk into the physician office and you are given a lab slip for testing. You need to go back to the physician office for the results (pay another office visit of course). Oh, my, your cholesterol is high. Now what? Doomed to taking statin med's forever? Well, your doc ordered your yearly labs to cover his tracks, as he should do these yearly tests. BUT do you really need the med? Heaven help us if our cholesterol is not in between those "required" numbers. So the doctor gives you the speech of diet and taking the statin med or die, right? Well just because the doctor seems to think you NEED the statin, does not mean that you really do. My hubby and I for example would never take them. "But won't we be headed for death with high cholesterol? Cholesterol will kill us!" Nope. Sorry, but I am convinced cholesterol is my friend. Between you and me...my last cholesterol number was 269. Yep, you read right. I also had a Calcium Scoring Scan done (easy 10 second xray) and there was NO sign of calcium buildup in my arteries. Cholesterol is not the enemy, it really does a body much good in fact. The real enemy is polyunsaturated vegetable oils--corn, soy, canola, etc. They attack our bodies in various negative ways, such as damaging our digestive system. But the BEAST here that causes the problem by these oils, is the INFLAMMATION they cause in our blood vessels. These oils leave behind "rough" areas that can harm our blood as it flows through our body. So we must work at protecting our body from inflammation and these rough spots --- this is the problem that needs to be addressed. What helps? Our friendly cholesterol is on the way to address the body's rough spots. Cholesterol comes in to make a patch over the rough spots and allows our blood to remain undamaged as it flows through our body. Yes, our wonderful cholesterol comes along to protect our blood from the "bad" inflammation each and every day of our life! It patches here and there and then one day, the patch is too much and a blockage is created! Now this is bad. So what do we do? Do we take the statin drugs? Statin drugs keep our liver from creating cholesterol and the liver becomes damaged. We all know that a damaged liver can lead to BIG problems. Yet we will not know about it for a long time because the liver has to be about 80% damaged before we begin to get noticeable symptoms. Meanwhile our liver cannot make the cholesterol our body needs. Your endocrine system--thyroid, adrenals, pancreas, pineal, thymus, etc.--which controls all of health, makes all its hormones from cholesterol. No cholesterol means no hormones, and as women, we know that with no hormones, life can be unbearable! Your doctor does more lab testing and now sees that you have more problems from weakening and compromised endocrine glands. Guess you now need to take MORE medications, right? Are we fixing the problems here! Nope. It gets better. Did you know that the brain is mostly cholesterol? So now you cannot think too well; and also did you know that amnesia is one of the possible side effects of taking statin drugs? Just keeps getting better. So what do we do? We protect our body from inflammation! I hate inflammation...what I did was change my diet and eliminate ALL the Omega 6 vegetable oils, along with anything else that causes inflammation. All that fast food is history, as well as daily biscuits and all those sweet sugary donuts. Red meat also went off the food list. On the list came water, tumeric, tart cherry and our anti-inflammatory foods. It takes incentive to do it, but it can be done. But you can take the statin, feel aches and pains, have gastric issues, feel tired and work with a minimal brain instead. There IS research out there that clearly shows us that INFLAMMATION is the REAL PROBLEM that causes heart disease and other issues; yet money is the main factor in all this statin use. So physicians will continue to tell you to take the statin drugs. Sad for the patient who does not know any better. In my reading, I came across this: You should want a cholesterol of above 200 if you hope to live long and prosper. That's right! Pick yourself up off the floor! Never just take MY word for it...ask your doctor (is that a good idea? yes.) and research, research, research! Knowledge is power. Blessings and health to you, JO Comments are closed.
